Meet Morley’s Legends
You might remember earlier this year I asked you to nominate a Legend of Morley – someone who has made a real difference to our community, whether through their work, their passion, or their dedication to others. From those nominations, 10 incredible Legends were chosen and celebrated with a special photoshoot, culminating in an exhibition at Crank Studios in August.
Each one has their own inspiring story, and together they show the strength, heart, and spirit that makes Morley such a special place
carl the cobbler

Carl the Cobbler was nominated for providing a much – loved service on Morley’s main street. From repairing boots, bags and even camera straps, to engraving and key cutting, he does it all with skill, charm and a big smile. Carl is a hardworking craftsman who keeps the cobbler’s trade alive, repairing rather than replacing and giving items a new life. Several nominations praised not only his work but his kindness, showing how proud Morley is to have a true cobbler with a generous spirit in town.
Clive McManus

Clive was nominated for his tireless work preserving Morley’s history. Through the Morley Community Archive, he has catalogued photos, digitised documents, and shared knowledge through talks, tours and online lectures during the pandemic. His meticulous care protects records for future generations, while his passion and generosity make him an invaluable resource and true Legend keeping Morley’s story alive.
Francesca Speight

Francesca, founder of Zen Babies, was nominated for creating a support network for Morley mothers. Through baby yoga, pram walks, massage sessions and meet-ups, she offers a safe, caring space for new mums adjusting after birth. Her work builds community, comfort and friendship during what can be a lonely time. She also links local businesses and co-hosts Grab a Coffee podcast. Her dedication makes her an inspiring Legend strengthening community ties.
James Tortice

James was nominated for his creativity and generosity. At just 13, he designs and sells postcards to raise money for charities like Macmillan Cancer Support. Living with autism and ADHD, art helps him express himself and connect with others. His animal drawings, including his popular hare, reflect his passion for nature. With family encouragement, James is already a Morley Legend.
Jo and Chris Gray

Jo and Chris were nominated for running Newlands Foodbank, founded during the pandemic to support families with essentials. Providing food, toiletries and even pet supplies, they ensured dignity for those in need. Seeing demand continued, they kept
the foodbank open and now serve the community weekly. Their commitment helps families manage costs and their compassion has made Morley stronger – true Legends in every sense.
Kathleen Smith and Louise Bentley

Kathleen and Louise were nominated for founding a book club that has now grown to more than 500 members. What began as a small monthly meeting has become a welcoming space where people connect, share ideas, find support, and make new friends. Now hosted at Rhythm and Rye, the group meets twice a month and is open to everyone. Thanks to Lou and Kathleen’s initiative, the book club has become not just a place to read, but a vibrant community hub in Morley.
Nick Hardman

Nick was nominated for creating unique toys for children in hospital, reflecting their medical conditions with features like hearing aids, feeding tubes and dialysis machines. Crafted in his home workshop with volunteer help, his designs bring joy to families in tough times. During the pandemic, he also 3D-printed PPE. Though he calls himself just a single dad raising kids, Morley knows him as a caring innovator and true Legend.
Parry Tahamtani

Parry was nominated for running Pizza Bello, a Morley favourite for nearly 40 years. Originally from Iran, Parry came to the UK with her baby daughter and built a business rooted in her Iranian and Italian background. Her pizzas, pasta and hospitality have become part of Morley life, even through the challenges of early years. Parry’s warmth and dedication have earned her loyal customers and lifelong friends. In her own words: “I love my job. I love my customers. This is my life.” Morley agrees: Parry is legendary.
Roy Field

Roy was nominated for his remarkable 47 years of service to Morley & District Lions Club CIO, where he is the longest-standing president, now in his 10th year. His dedication has helped the Lions raise money and support local people through countless events, from stalls at fairs and brass band competitions to Frank Sinatra concerts at Morley Town Hall. Roy’s tireless commitment to fundraising and community service has made a lasting impact, and his fellow townspeople agree he is a true Morley Legend.
Steven Holt

Steven was nominated for his charisma as Morley’s Town Crier. With over 50 years in the Morley Amateur Operatic Society, he brings warmth and energy to this historic role. His first cry after lockdown was a heartfelt thank-you to the NHS and essential workers. Also known as Morley’s Santa, Steven spreads Christmas joy each year. He truly embodies the community spirit and keeps a cherished tradition alive, making Morley proud to have its very own Town Crier.
Nominate a Local Legend
A Unique Film Photography Project
What makes a town? Its people. Every town has its legends—those who go the extra mile, whose kindness, dedication, and quiet efforts shape the community. Yet, too often, their contributions go unrecognised. Legends of Morley is here to change that.
This photographic project, funded by Morley Town Council, is capturing the stories of local heroes through the art of analogue film photography. Using vintage cameras and traditional darkroom printing, we are creating a timeless tribute to the people who shape our community.
Do you know a ‘Legend’ in Morley?
It could be someone who…
- Provides a great service to the community.
- Has achieved something remarkable.
- Deserves recognition for their impact.
Nominations do not have to have been born in Morley, they just need to live or trade in Morley, or simply have a strong connection with Morley.
At the end of the project, every hand-printed portrait will be showcased in a special exhibition, where we’ll come together to honour these incredible people.
