We are Experience Community – a not-for-profit organisation based in West Yorkshire, dedicated to promoting inclusive access to the great outdoors.
Led by people with personal, lived experience of disability and supported by knowledgeable non-disabled colleagues, we bring a deep understanding and a wide range of expertise to everything we do.
What We Do
Our Leeds hub – based at the Leeds Urban Bike Park within Middleton Park is a welcoming space where you can:
- Join us for an inclusive ramble through the park.
- Try out specialist mobility equipment.
- Experience the thrill of off-road adaptive cycling.
Our core mission is to help people with physical disabilities connect with nature – whether by building confidence to explore their local area, joining us for a full-day social ramble in the Yorkshire countryside, or developing skills through our wheelchair skills courses. We’re here to support you in discovering what works best for you.
Activities We Offer
- Inclusive walks/rolls and rambles using specialist off-road mobility equipment.
- Adaptive cycling sessions at the Urban Bike Park in Middleton Park and other locations across the North.
- Wheelchair skills sessions and courses across Yorkshire.
- Active travel support to build confidence in everyday mobility.
- Hire and sale of mobility equipment, including wheelchair clip-ons and cycles.
Our Story
Founded over a decade ago by Craig Grimes, who became paraplegic after an accident during university, Experience Community began as a personal journey. Craig, once an avid outdoorsman, found himself navigating a world that was no longer accessible in the same way. He began documenting access to outdoor spaces through videos and reports, which evolved into a mission-driven organisation that now partners with groups like the National Trust, Yorkshire Water, and National Trails to improve accessibility across the UK.
This spirit of advocacy and practical action remains central to who we are.
“Experience Community is an organisation that has shown me I can still be free to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ even as I lose the ability to walk – meeting new people, making new friends and visiting different places. My advice, whoever you are – is to take a deep breath and come along to see for yourself!”
